30 YEARS OF HISTORY

The EUROPEAN CARROM CONFEDERATION was established in 1996 in Zurich, Switzerland.

Since its inception, the organization has been pivotal in promoting the sport of carrom across Europe. It has successfully organized European championships and tournaments, fostering participation at all levels—from enthusiastic amateurs to seasoned professionals.

The first European Carrom Championship took place in 1997 in the UK, with five countries participating: Germany, Switzerland, the UK, Austria, and Italy. The tournament featured 48 players. By 2005, the event had grown significantly, with over 100 participants competing in the 2nd Eurocup held in Italy, as more nations joined the European carrom community.

Over the years, the Eurocup has been hosted in major cities such as Paris, London, Prague, Rome, Berlin, and Warsaw, as well as in charming smaller towns. Remarkably, the Eurocup has been held annually since 1997, with the exception of a global pandemic briefly halting the tradition for two years.

The 2025 Eurocup in Chianciano Terme will mark the fifth time Italy hosts this prestigious event, continuing its proud legacy in the European carrom family.

The European Championship - or Eurocup -  currently consists of 3 parts which have evolved over the years.

1) A Team Event consisting of 4 players with full European nationality who compete against all the other countries in both Singles and Doubles.

2) Doubles Event

3) Singles event

These last are open to all players officially resident in Europe.

The Singles and Doubles are played with the "Swiss System" - using SoL an elaborate computer program especially created for carrom by Lele Gaifas of Rovereto and used freely by carrom lovers the world over.  All participants play 8 to 13 rounds, there is no elimination and opponents are chosen on the basis of results of the previous round. This makes the challenge exciting and unpredictable until the very end. It also allows players of different skill levels to compete together and learn from each other. In a young sport this is very important and useful.
